Announcing the Feast

The chant that is sung just before Mass begins is called the Introit (pronounced “IHN-troyt”, from a Latin word meaning “to go in”), or entrance antiphon.  The introit is a short verse from the Bible that is part of the texts proper to each Mass, like the readings and responsorial psalm. The use of an entrance antiphon as the priest processes in to Mass dates back to the fifth century.  Because each day’s Mass has its own individual entrance antiphon text, it can also serve as an announcement of the particular liturgical importance of that day’s Mass.   You may find the entrance antiphon texts in English in Today’s Missal on pages 3-7.
