The Heart Knows
Knowing the symptoms of heart disease and how to manage them can improve the quality of your life. This week we continue to honor American Hearth Month by talking about heart disease and heart attack.
Heart disease, also known as coronary heart disease (CHD) or coronary artery disease (CAD), happens when cholesterol and fatty material, called plaque, build up inside arteries. Causes of this plaque build-up include too much fat and cholesterol in the blood, high blood pressure, smoking, and too much sugar in the blood (usually because of diabetes)
When plaque blocks an artery, it is difficult for blood to flow to the heart. A blocked artery can cause chest pain or a heart attack.
A heart attack happens when blood flow to the heart is suddenly blocked. Part of the heart may die if you do not get help quickly.
Call 911 if you develop signs of a heart attack – don’t delay.
